Europe Direct NI carried out a workshop with the international students of St Cairan's college to look at how they had integrated into the school and community and how this could be improved.

As part of preparing final year students for the workplace Europe Direct NI delivered a workshop for students.

The workshop looked at difference cultural beliefs, attidues and behaviours to prepare young people to work in a multicultural environment.

Workshop: Poland

As part of a series of workshops to help young people live and work more effectively in a more multi-cultural environment Europe Direct NI faciliated Women of the World deliver a workshop on Poland. Children learned about Poland's history, geography, culture and traditions as well as tasting some traditional Polish food.

Balmoral Show May 2011

Europe Direct NI asssited the EU Commission, Belfast to host an exhibition stand at The Balmoral show.

The show is one of the largest agricultural shows for both the farming and non farming community.

The stand attrached a range of visitors and had special activities and competitions for children.

 

Cultural Awareness Training
Care Workers Milton Keynes
14 & 15 June 2011
Europe Direct NI delivered two workshops to a care workers from a number of care homes in the Milton Keynes area.
The traning looked at the cultural differences which needed to be considered when caring for people from different cultures.

Fri 23.09.2011     Decade of Anniversaries – Where we Begin
Europe Direct developed a series of lectures for Council representatives and Good Relations Managers of the Western Forum representing 5 Council areeas. The first of the lectures was delivered by keynote speaker Dr  Éamon Phoenix who provided an hHistorical  background to the Twentieth Century events and the recent Troubles. The key issues/events: the Ulster Plantation , the Battle of the Boyne and the Penal Laws (1688-1793), the United Irishmen and Orange Order (1790s), the rise of Belfast (industry and sectarian riots), the Great Famine in Ulster and the emergence of Home rule v Unionism by the early 20th century.
Thurs 06.10.2011  Belfast 1798 Tour with Dr Eamon Phoenix for 6 Good Relations Managers
Part of the series of lectures for the Western Forum of 5 Council areas included an historical tour of 1798 central Belfast and Clifton St Graveyard (resting-place of United lrishmen, eg McCracken, Drennan etc), Friar’s Bush Famine Mass Grave (1847). The group had lunch in Stormontbefore a tour of the Assembly.

Opportunity Europe and Beyond

Opportunity Europe and Beyond is an annual two-day fair and exhibition,which helps visitors to find out more about working, studying, volunteering and travelling throughout Europe and beyond. The event is organised by the European Commission Office in Northern Ireland and Belfast City Council, and supported by Northern Ireland CILT, the British Council, Volunteer Now, the Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister, the NI Council of the European Movement and Belfast Metropolitan College. www.ec.europa.eu/northernireland

Friday 4.11.2011 Decade of Anniversaries (open to Council elected representatives)
This lecture was the second in a series of for developed by Europe Direct for Council representatives and Good Relations Managers of the Western Forum representing 5 Council areeas. The lecture was delivered by Dr Éamon Phoenix and looked at the revolutionary events/anniversaries of 1912-16, eg The Third Home Rule Crisis, Carson and Craig, the Ulster Covenant (912) Redmond and Home Rule, Churchill’s visit to Belfast (1912), Steps to Partition, rise of the UVF and Irish Volunteers and the threat of Civil War, the impact of World War One on Ireland including the Irish and Ulster Divisions ; the causes, course and consequences  of the 1916 Rising and the Battle of the Somme (‘Protestant Ulster’s blood sacrifice’).This would cover the key historical centenaries occurring over the next 5 years.

14 - 17 November 2011 Study Vist of UFI Farmers to Hungary

Europe Direct NI developed a study visit programme for 25 UFU farmers from the Omagh area to look at beef and dairy production in Hungary. The group stayed in Budapest and travelled to visit the farms as well as a biomas plant. The group alos enjoyed dinner on the Danube with a wonderful eveining view of the old part of the city.
