Photographic Winner Published Jan 2009

The winning photographs from a Europe Direct competition "Water we need it for work, life and play" have been published in a 2009 calendar.

This included Eimear Quinn's picture of her donkeys from Newtownbutler Primary School, Fermanagh and Niamh McDevitt's picture from Nazareth Primary School, Derry.

Europe Direct at Stormont

Jan 2009

Europe Direct NI exhibited a range of EU publications and materials including leaflets and posters available to schools at a conference in Stormont.

The event for the teaching staff of schools was hosted by the British Council.

Cultural Awareness Training

St Patricks College, Dungannon Feb 2009

Europe Direct NI delivered Cultural Awareness Training to teaching staff of St Patrick College, Dungannon looking at different cultural behaviours and its relevance in the classroom.

Training was delivered to the Diversity Committe of First Steps Womens Group, Dungannon on Cultural Diversity.

The training explored own and other cultural behaviours and attitudes and its impact when providing training and services within a multicultural society.

Europe Direct Photographic

Competition March 2009

Europe Direct NI and Europe Direct Derry & the North West lauched a photographic competition for primary school children in the Western Education and Library Board Area.

The theme of the competition was "Renewable Energy - How do you use it?"

Winners from each category, P1-P4 and P5 - P7 would receive a digital camera with runners up receiving a book token.

Emma ,P1 Newtownbutler Primary Sch, Co Fermanagh.

Emma received a digital camera for her winning photograph of a kite reflecting the use of wind to produce energy.

Runner Up P1-P4 Group

Samuel Coalter

Samuel Coalter P4, Brookeborough Primary School, Co Fermanagh.

Samuel received a book token as runner up in his age group.

His photograph of solar windows showed the use of solar energy to generate electricity for school.

Hannah Campbell

Hannah Campbell, P6, Hollybush Primary School, Derry.

Hannah received a digital camer for her winning photograph of a waterfall reflecting the use of water to produce hydro power.

Runner up P5-P7 Group

Lydia Kerr

Lydia Kerr P7, Moat Primary School, Lisnaskea, Co Fermanagh.

Lydia received a book token as runner up for her photograph of solar panels on the roof of her school which are used to generate electricity for whiteboards.

Cultural Awareness Training
St Patricks College, Employers
March 2009

Europe Direct NI was invited by St Patricks College to deliver training to employers from the Dungannon area as part of their cultural programme.

Employers explored their own cultural behaviours and shared expereinces of managing employees from different cultures.

IT & Internet Training for Elderly March 2009

Europe Direct NI delivered an eight week programme of IT & Internet training. The programmw was part of the Help the Aged initiative to support older people within the community to engage with new technology.

Participants developed word-processing skills, set up email accounts and searched the internet.

ABC Exhibition April 2009 Bulgaria

Europe Direct Veliko Tarnovo in Bulgaria ran an exhibition of ABC books in their Europe Direct offices "ABC Books from Europe" Their exhibition included ABC Books from Lithuania, Estonia, Sweden, Finland, The United Kingdom, Northern Ireland, France, Germany, Netherlands.

After the launch Europe Direct Veliko Tarnove will organize a traveling exhibition throughout the Europe Direct Netwok in Bulgaria.

Balmoral Show 13-15 May 2009

The European Commission and Europe Direct hosted and exhibition stand at The Balmoral show.

The show is one of the largest agricultural shows for both the farming and non farming community.

The stand attrached a range of visitors and had special activities and competitions for children.

Culinary Exhibition- Bulgaria

Europe Direct NI assisted Europe Direct Sliven, Bulagia in a culinary exhibition for the 9 May – Europe day.

Europe Direct Silven asked other Europe Direct partners to submit a recipie of a meal that is traditional for their region along with a photograph of the prepared emal.

The aim of the exhibition was to raise interest of the people from their region of the different European cultures and traditoins represented throughout the EU. Using the recipies the Europe Direct planned to prepare some of the recipies.

Cultural Awarness Training

June 2009

Causeway women's group explored cultural norms and values and how these influenced how we act and behave.

They compared a rnage f cultural dimensions as well as looking at differences in non verbal communication.

ICT Training for Help the Aged

World Culture Day June 2009

Europe Direct supported St Patrick's College, Dungannon to host a world culture day to celebrate the diversity of it's school and wider community.

The event was officialy launched by Maurice Maxwell, Head of the EU Commission, Belfast and the Mayor of Dungannon Council. The event included workshops, exhibitions, dance, music and food from around the world.

Training was delivered to Europe Direct netowrk members and other EU Informaiton providers as part of a training seminar organised by the EU Commission, London. The training explored own and other cultural behaviours and attitudes and its impact when doing business with other member states.
