Manchester Uni leads EU research to help burn victims The University of Manchester has led a team of European researchers in the development of an innovative diagnostic system which in just a few minutes pinpoints the type of bacterial infections in critically ill patients suffering from burns, chronic skin ulcers or serious wounds. And the quicker infections can be diagnosed, the faster patients' wounds can be treated, which in turn will lower the cost of lengthy hospital stays. Pakistan Floods: EU Raises Aid to €70m Monsoon floods have killed hundreds of people in Pakistan and left millions homeless since July. The EU upped its contribution to €70m from €40m in July. That does not include €130m in contributions from individual EU countries. The aid is being distributed by organisations involved in the relief operation. Commission Plan to reduce road deaths by 2010 The European Commission has adopted plans to reduce the number of road deaths on Europe's roads by half in the next 10 years. Initiatives proposed in a set of European Road Safety Policy Orientations 2011-2020 range from setting higher standards for vehicle safety, to improving the training of road users and increasing the enforcement of road rules. Commission to recover €265.02 million CAP ExpenditureA total of €265.02 million of EU farm money unduly spent by Member States is being claimed back as a result of a decision adopted by the European Commission. This money returns to the EU budget because of non-compliance with EU rules or inadequate control procedures on agricultural expenditure. Member States are responsible for paying out and checking expenditure under the Common Agricultural Policy and the Commission is required to ensure that Member States have made correct use of the funds. Under this latest decision, funds will be recovered from Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Luxembourg, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and the United Kingdom. €33.7 million will be recovered from Northern Ireland for weaknesses in the Land Parcel Identification System (LPIS-GIS), and in on-the-spot checks and deficiencies in the application of regulatory sanctions.
