EU STRUCTURAL FUNDS
The aim of the Structural Funds is to promote greater economic and social cohesion in the EU. There are four Structural Funds: The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF); The European Social Fund (ESF); The European Agricultural Guidance & Guarantee Fund (EAGGF) & The Financial Instrument for Fisheries Guidance (FIFG).

EU Structural Funds assistance in Northern Ireland also includes Community Initiatives - Support provided through the Community Initiatives is targeted at solving specific problems. These Initiatives are based upon three important underlying principles:

GRANTS OF THE EUROPEAN UNION
The Commission awards money in the form of grants in order to implement projects or activities in relation to European Union policies.
These programmes are usually managed by the appropriate Directorates-General within the European Commission. Some programmes have National Agencies appointed within the UK and Ireland to promote the programme and to provide help and support to applicants. These grants correspond to themes (see table below) and must be trans-national in order to receive support (i.e. have partners from different Member States). More information...
